P is for Presbyopia

It’s here.

Admittedly, the last year or so I’ve had trouble reading the tiny type on shampoo bottles and CD liner notes.

But yesterday, sitting on the couch, reading a hardback book in what must be 12-point type, I found I had to move the book farther away.

I couldn’t believe it. I played with it for awhile. Bring the book close to my face—type goes all blurry. Pull it away—it reappears, all clear.

I know this happens to just about everyone on the planet who lives to their Middle Ages. But you’d think people who’ve had bad vision all their lives would be cut some sort of break.

OK. Whine over.

On the plus side, it’s my twenty-first wedding anniversary. (With any luck at all, I’ll be able to read the dinner menu.)

Snap!!! Same thing happening to me - Two nights ago I found myself lifting my glasses to see to sew a hem. Sigh.

Congratulations on your wedding anniversary! It's so nice to "meet" someone else married for a long time with no kids. ;-) Hope the evening includes some wonderful wine and food - the fabulous company goes without saying.

If you order the fish sticks and cheese triangles, make sure they come with gravy.

-as always,
I'm happy you're happy

We were Presbyopians when I was growing up, but then I became an Episcopalian.

So we've known one another for twenty years? It just doesn't seem possible. We must be ancient--no wonder we're blind.

Isn't presbyopia where everyone you see looks like a priest? Congratulations

Happy anniversary~and I dread the coming presbyopia. I have better-than-perfect vision and my one trip to the eye doctor was so traumatic I cried all the way home. Id' rather hit the gynecologist and dentist in the same afternoon than have my eyes looked at.

Thanks for all the congratulatories, everybody. Mali: Right back at ya! Del: I made sure. SY: Actually, I met you in the office (in passing) before my wedding, I'm sure of it. I remember you giving us lots of *%$# for not having invited you. Mrs. S: Yes, and with that the desire to do naughty things. B: And that's saying something!

I remember meeting you after your wedding. I'd rag on you for not having invited me to the ceremony, and you'd scream back, "But I didn't even KNOW you then!"

Whichever of our recollections is correct, it has certainly been a looong and happy time.

SY: It certainly has. And chances are, both versions are correct. I have memory of being introduced to you in the office; I believe your first memory of me is that time we went out with Melissa to Hard Times Cafe. Probably you didn't notice me the first time because I was standing next to Tim.

No, I definitely remember you in the office once before we went out to Hard Times (and what a wretched meal that was, bad chili served twenty different ways). You were shy but charming.

Clearly Tim wasn't wearing his gray running shorts that day, or you'd have vanished into the mists of oblivion.

First the eyes, then the memory...

Wow, 21 years. I'm awestruck. How awesome! How did you celebrate this magnificent occasion?

Helen: We celebrated quietly this year—checked out a tapas menu at an inn. Last year we took a 2-week trip (unheard of!) to Oregon. We are extremely money-free lately, so have toned it down.

We did have an interesting weekend, though, which included walking into a bar for a quick drink and sitting next to a U.S. senator and his wife, who were having dinner there...had a lovely conversation!
